The Global Institute of Human Development (GIHD) is a not-for-profit educational Trust and a research-intensive institute working across mental health, public health, education and human development — in Pakistan and internationally.

The Global Institute of Human Development (GIHD) is a not-for-profit educational Trust established to make a long-term, sustainable contribution to society. Rooted in a decades-long legacy of research excellence, GIHD is a research-intensive institute committed to improving lives through evidence-based solutions.
GIHD generates evidence, builds capacity, influences policy, and delivers community-based mental health services to improve the wellbeing of children, young people, families, and communities.
GIHD offers a range of high-quality certificates, diplomas, and degree courses, designed to address complex global development challenges of the 21st century. Through collaboration, innovation, and capacity building, GIHD empowers individuals and institutions to create a lasting impact.
GIHD is part of Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University (STMU), which gives its academic programmes a university setting and a link to a tertiary care teaching hospital.

What we do
GIHD brings together research, education, policy, and community-based services to strengthen mental health systems and improve health outcomes in Pakistan and beyond.
GIHD's work runs as a cycle rather than a list: research generates the evidence, education and training put it into people's hands, services deliver it to communities, and policy impact carries it back into the systems that shape the next round of research.
Research
High-quality research addressing critical mental health and public health challenges in Pakistan and other low- and middle-income settings, spanning discovery, implementation, and translational research.
Education
Accredited and recognised education and training programmes that equip students, professionals, researchers, and communities with the knowledge and skills to improve mental health and public health.
Training
Building the workforce that delivers care — task-sharing, technology-assisted cascade training and supervision for non-specialists, and capacity building across health, education, social sciences and biological sciences.
Services
Accessible, evidence-based mental health services designed around the needs of children, young people, families, schools, workplaces and communities — including maternal and child health services at the MCH Center and technology-enabled solutions through Health Applications of Technology (HAT).
Policy
Working with policymakers, governments, researchers, practitioners, young people, people with lived experience and communities to translate evidence into policies and systems that improve mental health outcomes.
Areas of focus
Our academic and training programmes are informed by indigenous research and delivered to the highest global standards, ensuring both relevance and excellence.
Our research focuses on the mental health of children and young people, community and school-based mental health, digital mental health and innovation, mental health systems and policy, and public health and population wellbeing.
Research and education approach
GIHD teaches from two campuses: DHA Phase 5, Islamabad (research and postgraduate teaching) and Mandra, Tehsil Gujar Khan, Rawalpindi (IPHN&M, hostel, skills lab and the Maternal and Child Health Centre).
Programmes include PNMC-recognised LHV and CMW diplomas, a WHO-aligned Diploma in Family Medicine, mental health certificates and research-methods courses. Faculty and students work with communities in Pakistan and with international research partners named on this site.
Certificate credit hours are described as transferable to GIHD's planned Master of Public Health and Research (MPH&R), subject to that degree launching as published.
Credit hours earned through GIHD's certificate courses will be transferable to the upcoming Master of Public Health and Research (MPH&R) degree programme at GIHD.
